The Foster's Market Story

Foster's Market first opened its doors in May of 1990. It was the vision of Sara Foster, a caterer and former chef for Martha Stewart, to introduce great wines, specialty grocery items, fine coffees and freshly prepared home-cooked food to the small southern community of Durham, North Carolina.

Although the market was not intended to be "dine-in," there were a few tables with mismatched chairs that Sara picked up at yard sales and flea markets. When she noticed customers hovering over each other, looking for a place to sit during Sunday brunch, she decided to replace some of the grocery shelves with more funky tables and chairs.

Not only were customers coming to Foster's for what Sara was making in-house: baked goods, coffee drinks, soups, salads, dinner entrees and weekend brunches; they were coming for the inviting atmosphere that she had created.

Over the years, the menu has grown extensively and more seating has been added inside the market, as well as outside on the porches and lawns. In September of 1998, Sara opened a second market in the neighboring town of Chapel Hill. The great food and comfortable atmosphere make it a gathering place for just about everyone -- professionals, students, moms, dads, children, seniors, singles and couples. Both stores enjoy a loyal customer base. In fact, for many, Foster's has become a home away from home.

Some house favorites include Foster's homemade New York Style Crumbcake, Pumpkin Bread, Corn and Squash Casserole, Tarragon Chicken Salad with apples and grapes, creamy Caesar Salad with homemade croutons, and Key Lime Pie. Another favorite is the locally roasted coffee, a blend unique to Foster's. When Sara's mother, Say, comes to town, the customers know they will be in for a treat when she makes her famous bread pudding with bourbon sauce. The food at Foster's Market is always fresh, flavorful and homemade . . . right down to the mayo!

In addition to the restaurant and market, Foster's Market also provides catering services and has recently expanded to provide on-line shopping for gifts, Foster's private-label products and favorite specialty foods. Visit the on-line store to have a taste of Foster's delivered to you or your loved ones as a special treat.

Although Foster's Market has changed over the years, Sara upholds her high standards of quality and dedication to customer satisfaction in every aspect of the business. The great food, comfortable atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff are what keep people coming back. There is nothing else like it around! Come see for yourself what makes Foster's Market a local favorite.
